Singer had a sleeping room on one end of the living room and mine was opposite. I went into mine and lay down on the bed. I counted to three and passed out.

I didn’t get much rest.

At six forty five my bell rang. It rings from the desk and right now it was ringing two shorts and a long, which meant “trouble—come out quietly.”

I ran through the living room to the lobby door. Singer was dozing in his chair. There was no sound from the lobby. I turned the doorknob silently and opened the door.

The first thing I saw was Harry Baird’s back. He was standing near the desk, looking toward the stairs across the lobby. He was holding my gun, which was aimed at Scarface, the sleepyhead. Neither of them was sleepy any more. Scarface stood by his chair, pointing that little blue gun at Harry’s chest.

At the foot of the stairs I saw Dolly Spangler, standing straight and still. Behind her, one step up, stood Doc, the second playboy. He had a gun too, pressed against Dolly’s back. His would be loaded.

It was quite an impasse. Nobody had the drop on anybody. Harry could shoot Scarface all right, but then Doc could shoot Dolly. Scarface couldn’t shoot anybody, but nobody knew that except me. Anyway it didn’t matter now. Only Dolly mattered.

Doc was the one who finally said something.

“Miss Spangler is the only one we want,” he said. “If you people will kindly stand still, we’ll leave quietly.”

He talked real nice. Probably had a college education.

“I can’t stand still for that,” I said. “You know I can’t.”

Doc looked at me briefly.

“You don’t have any choice, friend,” he said. “We have the guns.”

“So have I!” Harry Baird yelled, brandishing my big pistol.

Scarface laughed. I looked at him.

“You don’t follow the joke,” I said. “Your gun’s empty.”

He crumpled up in the face. He hated to believe it. He tried not to. But he had to find out.
